Minimally Invasive Skull Base Surgery
The skull base is the portion of the skull which supports the brain. It forms the transition point for structures extending from the brain to the rest of the head and neck. The skull base is traversed and surrounded by important structures such as nerves, blood vessels, brain structures, muscles and glands. Lesions along the skullbase are difficult to reach and treat becomes of the complexity of the anatomy in this region.
Minimally invasive skullbase surgery uses approaches, techniques and tools to reach the skull base and brain either through naturally existing opening in the head or small windows created to reach targeted lesions. This approach ensures that patient can under go complex surgeries along the skullbase and recover with minimal morbidity.With the advances made in computer guided surgery, robotics and endoscopy, minimally invasive skull base surgery has allowed surgeons like Dr. Boahene to reach and treat complex tumors and lesions along the skull base.

Transorbital skullbase surgery
The walls of the eye socket are adjacent to most of the anterior skullbase. A small window sreated through the socket can give access to the adjacent skullbase. Through hidden incision under the eyelid, a small window can be created in the walls of the orbit through which an endsocope is passed to gain visualization of the brain and sinuses to treat target problems in these areas of the skull base. The novel window to the infratemporal fossa
A small but previously unrecognize window along the jaw bones,offers an excellent window into the infratemporal fossa and parapharyngeal space. Tranditional surgery to reach lesions in these skull base areas are tenchnically vifficult and invoves removal of bone, dissection of the facial nerve and manipulation of major blood vessels.
